Spot UV Printing (also known as Local UV coating) is a post-press surface finishing process. It applies a transparent UV varnish only to designated printed areas, which is instantly cured by ultraviolet light to form a high-gloss, embossed or textured transparent coating. This technique highlights key graphics and text, upgrades texture and creates strong visual contrast.
1. Core Principle
1) Selective Coating: Use screen printing plates or flexographic plates to coat transparent UV varnish (liquid resin) precisely on customized logos, patterns and text areas.
2) UV Curing: Right after coating, UV lamp irradiation cures the varnish within 0.1 to 0.5 seconds through chemical cross-linking, forming a hard, transparent and scratch-resistant film.
3) Contrast Effect: Obvious differences in gloss (glossy/matte), touch (smooth/textured) and structure (flat/embossed) are created on matte laminated or ordinary printed substrates.
2. Main Process Types & Effects
· Gloss Spot UV: The most common type, with mirror-like high gloss to highlight logos and headings.
· Matte Spot UV: Delicate foggy finish for a low-end premium look.
· Frosted UV: Fine sand surface with a unique tactile feeling.
· Heavy-Duty 3D UV: Thick coating (10–30μm) with obvious raised embossed texture for 3D touch.
· Special Effects UV: Rainbow UV, refraction UV, wrinkle finish, ice crystal finish, crystal texture and more.
·
3. Standard Production Workflow
1) Prepress File Making: Prepare the base printing artwork and an independent spot UV special color layer to mark UV coating areas. The registration error shall be controlled within 0.1mm.
2) Base Printing: Complete CMYK or spot color printing; matte lamination is mostly adopted for stronger contrast, accounting for 80% of finished products.
3) UV Plate Making: Screen plates for thick coating and 3D effects; flexographic plates for high-precision and on-line mass production.
4) Local Varnish Coating: Apply UV varnish accurately by professional spot UV coating machines or screen printing machines.
5) UV Curing: Adopt high-pressure mercury lamps or LED-UV lamps for instant drying, allowing direct stacking of finished products.
6) Final Inspection: Check registration accuracy, gloss performance, coating adhesion, missing coating and dirt spots.
4. Comparison of Three Common Implementation Methods
Method | Working Principle | Advantages | Disadvantages | Application Scenarios |
Screen Spot UV | Screen stencil coating | Thick coating, strong 3D effect, diverse textures | Low production speed, limited precision | High-end packaging, business cards, embossed effects |
Flexo Spot UV | Flexographic coating | Fast speed, precise registration, on-line production available | Relatively thin coating | Books, periodicals, mass packaging |
Offset Spot UV | Offset press coating | Ultra-high precision, zero registration deviation | High equipment cost, thin coating | High-end picture albums, premium gift boxes |
5. Materials & Equipment
· Substrates: Coated paper, ivory board, matte art paper, laminated paper, PVC, PET and other synthetic materials.
· UV Varnish: Glossy, matte, frosted, elastic and scratch-resistant types.
· Equipment: Off-line coating machines, on-line UV units, screen printing machines, LED-UV curing systems.
6. Core Advantages
1) Visual Highlighting: Focus viewers’ attention on key information through strong gloss contrast.
2) Premium Texture: Upgrade product grade with rich visual and tactile experience.
3) Surface Protection: Excellent performance in scratch resistance, water resistance, fingerprint resistance and folding resistance.
4) High Efficiency: Instant curing, fast turnaround and no delay to production schedules.
5) Eco-friendly: Solvent-free, low VOC emissions, compliant with food packaging environmental standards.
7. Typical Applications
· Packaging: Cosmetics, tobacco & alcohol, tea, 3C electronics and luxury gift boxes for logo and core pattern highlighting.
· Publishing: Book covers, hardcover books, picture albums and magazine headings.
· Commercial Prints: Business cards, greeting cards, invitation cards and certificates.
· Labels: Wine labels, daily chemical product labels and high-end hang tags.
8. Design & Production Notes
· Recommended Background: The best contrast is achieved by glossy spot UV on dark or matte backgrounds.
· Registration Control: Strict alignment between UV areas and base artwork is required; fine lines and small fonts are prone to misalignment.
· Coating Thickness: Thick varnish brings stronger 3D effect but risks sagging and slow drying; thin coating ensures better stability.
· Lamination Matching: Matte lamination + glossy spot UV is the classic combination; glossy lamination weakens UV contrast.
· Cost: Higher than ordinary printing, but more cost-effective than hot stamping and embossing.
9. Spot UV vs Full UV vs Hot Stamping
· Spot UV: Selective gloss effect, 3D texture, transparent finish and moderate cost.
· Full UV: Overall surface glazing, mainly for protection without visual contrast.
· Hot Stamping: Metallic opaque effect with high-grade texture but complex craftsmanship and higher cost.

Summary
Spot UV printing is a cost-effective premium post-press process. With transparent coating, high gloss, 3D texture and wear resistance, it delivers dual visual and tactile upgrades for printed products, and has become a standard finishing technology for high-end packaging and premium printed materials.
